AMWA Region 5 Conference 2020

Dear SJB students and faculty,

You're invited to attend the Region 5 American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) Conference at the Luis Muñoz Marín Foundation in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Region 5 includes those medical schools with AMWA chapters in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, and abroad. 

The conference, which will take place on February 7-8, 2020, will be a great opportunity to build bridges and develop connections among members of these different chapters. There will be multiple speakers, including two female general surgeons from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In addition, there will be an opportunity to present your research poster. This is a fantastic way to showcase any work you would like to present and will look great on your resume! Abstracts are due February 1, 2020.

On the website, you will find links to buy tickets to the conference. You must register for the conference in order to attend.

 - $15 for national student members & residents
 - $20 for students & residents without national membership

Good afternoon everyone, 

I am writing to you to announce the first AMWA meeting!

Date: Monday, October 7th
Time: 5:00-6:00pm

The American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) is a national organization established in 1915 with the purpose of advancing women in medicine and improving women's health. There is a lot of exciting news in the works to share and lots of leadership opportunities available. In case you haven't heard, we have just gotten word that we have the honor of hosting the AMWA conference this year. Of course, planning a conference of this magnitude will take a lot of work, and we will need a dedicated team of individuals to take on the challenge! So if you are interested in taking on a leadership role, please consider participating. More details will be delivered in the meeting!

Hi AMWA Members! Welcome back to another semester! Here's some important updates - take advantage of your membership with the following opportunities:

JOIN US AT THE AMWA REGION 5 CONFERENCE
There will be a group of SJB students traveling to Birmingham, Alabama for the 2019 AMWA Region 5 Conference at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on February 15-16, 2019.
Please, please let me know if you're going!
Remember to register! The deadline for poster abstracts is February 1st, so you still have some time to submit an abstract about your research or clinical case. AMWA is an organization committed to advancing women in medicine, and this conference will bring together pre-medical students, medical students, residents, and physicians from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, and abroad. The agenda includes lunch and a lecture series Friday afternoon, a networking charity auction Friday night, and poster presentations, workshops, and a capstone lecture Saturday morning. Learn more and register for the conference.
This conference is open to all, regardless of gender or AMWA membership status, so feel free to invite your medical friends. Check out last year's conference!

Scholarship deadline has been extended to JANUARY 31st, 2019! Apply now!
The Haffizulla Family Scholarship Fund was founded by 2014-2015 AMWA President Dr. Farzanna Haffizulla. This scholarship is meant to perpetuate the involvement of young leaders in disease prevention and national health and wellness. A maximum of two scholarships each in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded by Dr. Haffizulla or her designee during the annual national meeting.

HPV AWARENESS WEEK
Support HPV awareness week and join AMWA and the Global Initiative Against HPV and Cervical Cancer for the informative exciting webinar series!
The 1-hour webinars will take place from 12:00pm - 1:00pm on January 22-25 and January 28, 2019. They are intended for members of the public, patients, healthcare providers, and anyone else who wishes to learn more about various aspects of HPV-related disease and HPV prevention, including HPV vaccination.

The Medical Women's International Association (MWIA) Centennial Congress will be held July 25 - 28, 2019 in New York City. Submit your poster abstract by February 28, 2019 using this form.

#METOO Event Tomorrow at 11 AM

We have teamed up with the SJBSOM OB/GYN Interest Group to participate in the ME TOO movement against sexual violence to increase awareness & to educate the students about the school's policies and protocol regarding any situation that may happen during our years here.

​Tomorrow, Dec. 14, 2018 after the MS3 Shelf (around 10:30-11:00 am) we will have some banners and markers available so you can write a message with the hashtag #METOO.

We will be taking pictures and these will later be published in our school's social media page and newsletter. If you cannot make it to school and are still interested in participating you can make your own sign or "mini banner" at home and send the picture to Paola Colón Figueroa, president of the OB/GYN Interest Group.
